How to Destroy the Internet, Part 1:
Yahoo and AOL Want to Tax Email

Saturday, February 4th, 2006

The freedom and neutrality of the internet is much of what makes it so empowering to us, but numerous companies are trying to hijack the Internet as we know it. It’s time we start talking about it and fight them one issue at a time.

A Review of the Shiira Web Browser

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

What Is It?
Shiira is a web browser based on Apple’s webkit aka the rendering engine behind Safari and is meant to compete with Safari on features Safari doesn’t currently offer.
Some genuinely interesting features include:

Tab Expose (originally seen in, well, Apple’s Expose but also available as a Firefox plugin called Foxspose)
Open All Links in Tabs

Some serious [...]

The Coming Mac-Centric Name Change

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

It’s probably worth it to state the obvious: Apple is changing the names of all of it’s machines to make sure the word “Mac” appears in each and every available model. If Mac is already in there, it probably won’t change. If it’s not, then be prepared for an awkward shift.

iBook will change [...]

Amazing View of the Aurora from Space

There’s a pretty astounding picture of the Earth’s aurora as seen from space courtesy of the relatively new IMAGE satellite as well as a movie of the aurora in action. You really shouldn’t miss this.

FedEx is Worse Than the Cable Guy

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

I’ve spent the day tied to the homestead waiting for a package from FedEx which according to their website has been “On FedEx vehicle for delivery” since 6:20 am this morning. When will it arrive? Who knows, but if I want to lay my hands on it, I have to be in my [...]

The OS Wars Are Back with Mac OS X 10.5 vs. Windows Vista

The OS wars will come back this year after being dormant for over a decade.
Microsoft will be releasing Windows Vista while Apple is sure to have another Mac OS X update on the way. It will more than likely be the story [...]

A Quick Review of iPhoto 6

Friday, January 20th, 2006

I’m generally enjoying the improvements in iPhoto 6.
Here’s the breakdown.
The good:
- It’s much faster. I run a 1.25 GHz Powerbook with only 512 MB of RAM and it speeds along quite nicely.
- I love the new full screen mode and it is now my default for photo editing and comparing shots.
The possibly good:
- iPhoto [...]

My Safari vs. Firefox Results

Friday, January 13th, 2006

I spent the last week trying to use Firefox as my primary browser, an experiment to see if I should have it replace Safari. The results? As of today, I’m back to Safari. Why?

Safari:

has inline spellchecking from an OS-wide dictionary.
runs much faster, especially when loading up multiple tabs.
has much better integration with [...]

Gains and Losses with the MacBook Pro

Wednesday, January 11th, 2006

Lost:

Firewire 800 (This may signal a very short life for Firewire 800)
PC Card slot (Replaced with emerging but lesser supported ExpressCard slot)
Modem (We’re all using wifi when traveling anyway, right?)
S-Video out (An adapter can be used on the DVI out port)

Gained:

Intel Processor
ExpressCard/34 slot
Integrated iSight Camera
Magnetic power cable (I love this.)
Magnetic lid
Optical Audio
Frontrow with Remote Control [...]

Nice Logo We’re Having

Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

Google has a great logo up today celebrating the birthday of Loius Braille.
At this point I realize that “Google has a nice logo today.” is essentially the geek equivalent for “Nice weather we’re having.”
