The Accord Hybrid Sucks, Only Saves Two Miles a Gallon
Well, it would seem the Accord Hybrid does a crap job of being fuel efficient. From The New York Times:
The 2005 Honda Accord hybrid gets about the same miles per gallon as the basic four-cylinder model, according to a review by Consumer Reports, a car-buyer’s guide, and it saves only about two miles a gallon compared with the V-6 model on which it is based. Thanks to the hybrid technology, though, it accelerates better.
Hybrid technology, it seems, is being used in much the same way as earlier under-the-hood innovations that increased gasoline efficiency: to satisfy the American appetite for acceleration and bulk.
It only saves two miles a gallon? What is this crap? Don’t buy this car thinking it’s fuel efficient. Seriously, don’t buy this car under any circumstances. This sort of engineering should not be rewarded.
Get yourself a Toyota Prius instead. Or ride a bike. Or walk.

Two things: One, a permalink to the NYTimes article. I don’t know how to leave html in your comments, so you’ll have to edit it, but the permalink is here
Two, yes, absolutely do not buy an Accord. But don’t dismiss all Hondas – the Insight gets better mileage than my boss’s Prius, whose real-world consumption settled around 45 MPG.

Note from a car driver here… the reason the Accord ROCKS is that they were able to significantly improve horsepower and torque without making it a gas pig. Consumers want power, and if something like this saves the tremendous fuel usage associated with that, Honda should be applauded.
