This is a very nice review. I did a presentation on Pages 2 for a local Macintosh Users Group in Vancouver WA and it was interesting to see how these relatively naive users saw the program. Most thought it was more trouble than it was worth but some business people loved the functional aspects of the templates and the ability to create their own. Interestingly a recent switcher (who had used Microsoft Publisher) was one of the most impressed. The export function DOES stink but most of the target audience will either be printing or exporting to PDF so this isn't as much of an issue as I thought it was. My main caution was to only export relatively simple documents and to always preview them before sending them out. Nice review! Thanks.

T Boon,

You'll be happy to know you're not the first to slap me on the wrist for the offense. You are in good company with my 9th grade english teacher as you both more than likely cringe equally at my lazy exchange between "its" and it's". I have since cleaned up my act thanks to a Mr. Strunk and a Mr. White, but have not yet found the time to work my way back through old posts.

Regardless, you have my apologies. I've edited the Pages review and have added a note at the top that it is for an older version than the currently available release.

I stopped reading your review after about your seventh use of “it’s” where you should have used “its.” (The former is a conjunction; the latter is the possessive pronoun you thought you were using.)

That is such a juvenile mistake that it makes me doubt the value of any opinions you may about a word processing program.

Not trolling. I honestly don't see the need to export to Word. If I want to share documents widely or cross-platform, I export to PDF. If I want to work on them, I would use Pages, no?
I dispise Word with a passion. It has a truly awful user interface, takes up a rediculous amount of memory before even opening a document and has decidedly odd behaviour at times.
The best word processor ever was Word Perfect 5.1 for DOS and nobody has produced anything that can out-perform it yet. (Trust me, I've explored its limitations, or lack therof).
For the last few years I've used OpenOffice.org and am now using NeoOfficeJ. I wrote two dissertations using these and would take them over Word for handling masses of text in a complex document any time, especially NOJ. Certainly the word processing functionality of these is up to scratch for business use.
Poor HTML export is inexusable from Apple. I wonder if their native format is XML based? This would be sensible and you'd think they could write exporters/converters to HTML/XHTML. I'd like to see them support the Open Document format. If they do, I'll treat myself to Pages.

I really like Pages and I try to use it as much as I can as a replacement of Word. I do agree that the response time is slow, sometimes very slow, and that's the program main weakness in my opinion. I work on documents that can be 12 page long and include plenty of .jpegs (no .mpegs or .avi!), and man it is irritating to wait just to see letters appear one by one!
And where are the other templates? By now, the 40 templates on board are tired and need to be replaced by fresh ones. Why can't apple do the same with pages templates that it does with the Widgets on its site? That would make Pages come alive, wouldn't it?
I'll post this suggestion on apple.com as well and hope someone will read it.

It is really early days for Pages. I have just written a proposal with it and the document looks 'cleaner' than Word.
The biggest benefit that I can see over Word is the ability to save each page as a template. Of course in Word you can save documents as templates but what Pages offers people like me is the ability to add prefomatted pages (that I have already formatted and styled) to my document in the same way as people add slides to a Keynote or PowerPoint presentation.
I am looking forward to seeing 3rd party developers providing useful templates like DVD inserts, Proposals, Contracts, Sales material. The future's bright, the future is simpler programms like Pages.
However, and it is a small however, the program is sometimes slow to respond and is clearly a v1.0. Looking forward to continuing to use this.

Microsoft Word 2004 for the Mac is priced at $229.99 while Microsoft Office Suite 2004 for the Mac is priced at $399.99. Pages and Keynote 2 come together as iWork for $79.

Very thorough and accurate review. Thanks. One question.
What's the cost difference between Pages and Word?
