I am a professional housekeeper and I hate Dyson. The uprights are impossible to use on a spiral or a straight staircase (as well as being dangerous),the power bars and the hard floor attachments on all styles are too high to get under furniture, when I want to use the upholstery attachment on the canister model the "arm" is too long so I have to tuck it under my elbow just to vacuum a couch. Now when I know a new client has one, I just bring my Kenmore canister.

Dyson Vacuums...can fly.
My wife proved this but they do tend to loose the spring when they hit the ground and hyper-extend.
I arrrived home to find the Dyson in pieces in the front yard.
Coincidentally, I had been to a trift shop and spent $15.oo on a eureka which worked well but only lasted a few weeks.
I then bought a Hoover for $20.00 at another thrift shop and so far, it looks like it will outlive the Dyson no problem.
If you are considering a Dyson, buy 3 or 4 other lesser priced vacuums instead. You will still be money ahead and can simply plug a new one in as they quit performing.
The Hoover from the thrift shop simply needed to be cleaned out and the previous owner apparently never read the manual.
Despite completely understanding the Dyson, it became obvious that it was going to continue to be a maintenance nightmare.
We own some big dogs and the Dyson was quickly overwhelmed.
The pet rating could be good for parakeets...but hairy animals appear to be beyond Dyson capability.
Even the mechanical aspects of the machine quickly become so laden with hair that they fail to operate as designed.
It is a Hype driven product and for those who never really put it to the test, it would appear to be the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I could build a poodle out of a days worth of dog hair in my household and the Dyson is simply not up to the task.
The hoover cannot hold as much and requires more trips to the dumpster but it doen not quit. The Dyson "thermaled out" and shut its motor off almost every time we used it.
The belt tensioner sounded like an explosion was just around the corner.
The Dyson also proved to be abusive to the carpet and tore patches of shag out of the backing, Too much suction/too hard bristles then no suction.

I just spent the last two hours unclogging and washing out and using a hook to pull balls of dog hair out of the fancy vortex top of the Dyson...which had in fact LOST SUCTION. For anybody who is stuck with one of these boat anchors, the trick is to get a wire clothes hanger, cut the hanger part off leaving as long of a length as possible to straighten into a long stiff wire. Then bend a small hook into the end. Disassemble the Dirt catcher part and look up inside to view the holeswhere the air is supposed to be coming in. Two to closest to the back of the vacuum will be the worst, followed by the next two forward and so on. Plunge the little hook into each one and spin the wire to gather some hair then pull it out. When you think you have it all, you dont. Take the assembly to the bathtub and run vast quantities of water into the inlet. Shake the unit out and go back to fishing for hair. Repeat the process 10 or 15 times and finally, dry out and allow to dry as best you can.
Now go wash the bathtub since it now looks like a family of ground squirrels was murdered there. Isn't life just so much easier with these modern time saving Dyson appliances?
Have fun Fishing!

Our Dyson that was supposed to be built for pets continually gets doghair stuck in the brush mechanism. My wife likes the machine but I get stuck with keeping the piece of garbage working. I wish she hadn't given away the Hoover! Junk!

I have a dc09
Very poor perfomance.
Has very little suction.
Vary costy to repair.
Would not buy another one?

I am impressed with something about Dyson.
Dyson has incorporated advertising at its lowest and managed to moderate it to its highest acceptable level.
The Vacuum cleaners do not loose suction; they suck from the purchase price and forever more.
They are not bad as Vacuum cleaners but they are not the best and they are most definately overpriced. It is true that they dont loose suction totally but they do reduce suction from the instant they are turned on...and will dramatically reduce suction through vacuum operated check-valves in an instant if the "vacuum-end" becomes restriced to a set range. BTW, a "Set Range" is a way to tell lies legally within acceptable or accepted parameters.
To me, a Vacuum Cleaner that reduces it's suction is loosing suction...and dodging this fact sucks!
Onto the fan crap...
The traditional fan is not gone, it is inside the base which I prefer to call a "box".
It is not an air amplifier, it is an air compressor as are all fans.
The part that is being portrayed as a fan is not a fan at all...it is a combination of a duct and a circular wing.
By virtue of their shape, wings or airfoils create pressure differentials (Highs and lows) as they pass through the air.
Fans are simply airfoils in motion.
Dyson is simply using a fixed , circular wing and some fancy circular ductwork to move air in a single plane or direction.
The fanblade is renamed as an "amplifier" but it is still right there in the base...and it is still a fanblade.
So without a better way of expressing it, the Dyson fan is not bladeless, it is a fan with blades whose air pressure is directed at some "wings" via "ducts" that cause differential air pressures to exist and therefore cause ambient air to move.
The final result is that air is moved but the pulsations are a higher and less noticable frequency...like many tiny buckets instead of a few large buckets.
Many/smaller fan blades and and air chamber/shock-absorber should be able to more efficiently move the air horizontally without going through all of the Dyson "convolutions".
This appears to be a "smoke and mirrors issue".
Admittely, it does not appear that Dyson has claimed to move air any more efficiently... just in a different way....ok, I am not so certain that this is true either.
Can you draw air into the base of a fan, force it through a fan (a set of fan blades), force it through a circular duct/airfoil arrangement and infer that is is more efficient than a traditional fan blade which is afterall a simple rotating airfoil?
So, what is my opinion about Dyson...the man?
I personally believe that he has an enormous ammout of money.

I bought my Dyson dc25 less than two years age, the motor self destructed and since I thought that something was sucked up and jammed the unit, I took it apart. i found that the motor fan blew apart in pieces and jammed the motor. I freed the motor and it works fine, I called Dyson for a replacement motor fan and was told to throw the junk in the trash, I've voided the warantee. Why Dyson won't sell me the part or direct me to where I can purchase it myself is pure greed on their part. I am surprised that Dyson sent some of the fine folks on this web site the necessary parts for them to replace, but a handy guy, whom is more than responsible, won't give the time of day is beyond me...Greed, I'll never buy this junk again, just on the fact Dyson isn't customer caring, $$$, corperate greed.
