Gains and Losses with the MacBook Pro

Lost:
- Firewire 800 (This may signal a very short life for Firewire 800)
- PC Card slot (Replaced with emerging but lesser supported ExpressCard slot)
- Modem (We’re all using wifi when traveling anyway, right?)
- S-Video out (An adapter can be used on the DVI out port)
Gained:
- Intel Processor
- ExpressCard/34 slot
- Integrated iSight Camera
- Magnetic power cable (I love this.)
- Magnetic lid
- Optical Audio
- Frontrow with Remote Control
Where’s the dramatically increased battery life that we would supposedly see with these new processors? Also, upgrading only the 15″ with intel procs while the 12″ and 17″ sit unupdated will destroy 12″ and 17″ sales. Here’s hoping this state of affairs doesn’t last very long for everyone involved.

Magnetic power cable rocks.
What is a magnetic power cable?
With most notebooks, if you trip over the cable there are decent odds it will pull the notebook off of your desk. If it does manage to yank out the cable without pulling the laptop, you generally end up doing some damage to the cable or port.
With the magnetic one, a magnet holds the connection in place, but if it gets pulled, it detatched without friction.
Apple has pictures of the magnetic power cord available.
2-4x speed increase is amazing. Getting a 30% increase over a previous version is usually considered pretty good.
I believe the 12″ pro version is being discontinued.
I can’t imagine the 12″ will go away. There’s a definite need for an ultralight pro laptop.
