The Difference Between Blu-ray and HD-DVD in 30 Seconds
The difference between Blu-ray and HD-DVD is simple: capacity, as in how much stuff you can put on a disc.
| Blu-ray | HD-DVD | |
|---|---|---|
| HD Video Capacity | ~5 hours | ~3 hours |
| Data Capacity | 25 GB | 15 GB |
In short, blu-ray holds 40% more stuff. That means you can back up more photos on your computer and watch more episodes of Lost on a single disc.
- One format is not prettier than the other as they both use the same techology for video. If anything will affect the level of pretty, it’ll be how good the studio did at scanning in the film.
- Ignore reviews of the current players available. Both players are clearly glitchy and should have spent more time in quality control. They rushed them out, but time will work out the kinks as well as bring the prices down to reasonable levels.
- Ignore the Current Prices. The marketplace will bring the crazy prices you see today down the exact same way it did with the VCR and with DVD. In a few years, you’ll see video on the evening news of old ladies getting trampled at Walmart to get their hands on a $30 next-gen disc player, regardless of which format it is.
So, what should you do if you want to buy one now?
Don’t. Find some other way to spend your money. Feed an orphan. Save a whale. But don’t buy a glitchy premature disc player that will be available much cheaper in only six months.

This is awesome info. thanks.
just wondering does the glitchiness include the player thts on the ps3?
From what I’ve heard, the PS3 makes both a fantastic blu-ray and dvd player.
I have heard that several PS3’s were unable to play some of the latest Blu-Ray discs due to a new copy-protection coating that has been placed on the disks. While I understand some 3rd party manufacturers are having problems, Sony’s flagship product shouldn’t be having problems with their own technology.
Very well written. In less then 30 seconds you summed it up. Best advice to repeat what was written in this article is just wait for the dust to settle, you’ll save money as well as avoid buying technology that still has a few kinks in it. It’s the same war that went on with VHS and Betamax. Let somebody else be the ginny-pig. Anyway with the price of gas who has money to waste!
hd-dvd is dead because almost all the film studios have switched to blu-ray and theres like only about 4 left for hd-dvd which are already looking to change disc format and the discs ent glitchy ive got a ps3 and it runs perfectly
